What is Amazon Sidewalk?

Amazon Sidewalk is a low-bandwidth, low-power, long-range communication network designed to enable connected devices to securely communicate with the AWS cloud. This innovative network is particularly beneficial for applications such as smart water meters, which may be located far from Wi-Fi coverage or in areas where cellular connectivity is limited. By leveraging Amazon Sidewalk, devices can maintain long battery life while ensuring reliable connectivity. Learn more about Amazon Sidewalk here.

How does Amazon Sidewalk work?

Amazon Sidewalk works by creating a low-bandwith network that leverages small portions of internet bandwidth from participating Amazon devices, like Echo speakers and Ring cameras, to create a shared, community-wide network. These devices act as “Sidewalk Bridges” by securely sharing their internet connection with nearby Sidewalk-enabled devices. This extended network allows these devices to stay connected even when they are outside the typical Wi-Fi range, ensuring continuous operation of features like device tracking and notifications. Data transmitted over Amazon Sidewalk is protected by multiple layers of encryption, ensuring privacy and security for users.
